Samenvatting

A curiously shaped handaxe, found in a secondary position near Dronten (Flevoland). A curiously shaped handaxe was found on a rubbish dump near Dronten in the province of Flevoland; its original provenance is unknown. The handaxe has a back along one of the edges, consisting of old frost-split faces. It is not a typical Keilmesser, however, since the cutting edge opposite the back is not straight but has a convex curve. The handaxe is heavily damaged by secondary frostsplitting, as a result of which large parts of the tool have disappeared (indicated by stippling in the drawing). The implement also shows brown patina, coarse scratches and fluviatile rounding of ridges. These last three phenomena are also found on artefacts of the Rhenen Industry, known from a group of Early Middle Palaeolithic sites in the central Netherlands. Therefore it is suggested that the handaxe may derive from layers of the Urk Formation, possibly in the ice-pushed region of the central Netherlands, just like the thousands of artefacts from the many sites of the Rhenen Industry.
