Van Giffen, Steenhuis en het toezicht bij de afgraving van de wierde van Dorkwerd (Gr.) in 1908
Samenvatting
Van Giffen, Steenhuis and the supervision at the quarrying of the dwelling mound of Dorkwerd (province of Groningen) in 1908. This year is the centenary of the famous Dutch archaeologist A.E. van Giffen starting his career as an investigator of dwelling mounds (terpen) by making observations during the commercial quarrying of the mound of Dorkwerd. This job was first offered to a fellow student and friend (Steenhuis), who accepted it. It is not known why the job was later given to Van Giffen. A possible explanation is presented, and it is shown that the incident even affected Steenhuis’s professional attitude towards Van Giffen.
