Samenvatting

The moats around the mansion of Ringenum at Delfzijl (province of Groningen). The digging of a trench for a sewage pipe along part of the Rijksweg road in Delfzijl was archaeologically supervised. The remains of a large 16th century house surrounded by moats were known to be situated near the Rijksweg. The trench was going to cut across this site and hit one of the moats. This moat turned out to have been filled in as recently as 1960. The depth of the moat was two metres. Close to the Damsterdiep canal, another moat was visible in crosssection. Here the fill contained not only recent material but also 17th-century glass and old bricks.
