Sterven op staande voet
Samenvatting
Drowned wood standing its ground. During the Holocene, pine (Pinus sylvestris) spread from the elevated Drents-Friese Plateau over the low-lying peat areas and the coastal zone of the Northern Netherlands. At poorly drained spots on the Plateau pine could survive the competition from the deciduous trees. Drowning and intensifying land use caused pine to disappear as an indigenous species around the Subboreal/Subatlantic transition. Stumps, trunks and areas of drowned pine forest form the silent witnesses of an untimely death.
