Samenvatting

A leaf point of the Mauern type with possible hafting traces. A leaf point of the Mauern type is described and illustrated. The findspot is unknown, but it is probable that the tool originates from the central part of the Netherlands. The tool is beautifully worked with direct soft percussion. At the base, however, a small remnant of cortex could not be removed by the maker. Though this must have hampered hafting somewhat, there are several indications that the lower half of the point was in fact fixed in a haft: on face B a small spot of dark residue (birch tar?) is present, and on both faces several bright spots occur that may have been caused by friction inside the haft. Leaf points like this one were probably hafted on throwing spears.
