Samenvatting

The 2008 excavation at the Grote Markt in Groningen. During six weeks from April to June 2008 an excavation took place at the ‘Grote Markt Oostzijde’ (east side of the central square) in Groningen. It was the first phase in a large-scale redevelopment programme. This will require a full-scale excavation. The 2008 excavation was partly intended to prepare for this. The earliest evidence of habitation that was found came in the form of traces of old farmland from the later part of the Early Middle Ages (9th-10th century AD). Most traces by far date from the High Middle Ages (10th-13th century AD), being mostly pits and ditches. Later, in the High Middle Ages (c. 12th century AD), one or more buildings were built here, most probably barns. In the early Late Middle Ages (c. 1300 AD) these were followed by a brick house that stood here until it burned down during the World War II liberation in April 1945.
