Samenvatting

A bronze spearhead in the stream valley of the Oostervoortsche Diep east of Norg (province of Drenthe). In May 2009 an amateur archaeologist discovered a bronze spearhead in the stream valley of the Oostervoortsche Diep east of Norg. The findspot is close to what was without doubt an ancient ford/bridge (no remains of the ford or bridge itself are known). The spearhead dates from around 1000 BC; as the artefact is undecorated, it is difficult, if not impossible, to say anything about where it may have been produced. In other periods and regions special objects were deposited near stream crossings, the most spectacular being a deposit consisting of ten Bronze Age axes that was recently found in the Kleine Beerze near Hoogeloon. Most deposits however consist of single objects, like the spearhead from Norg. The Norg spearhead shows several casting defects. There are more examples to suggest that gifts for supernatural beings deposited near a river or stream crossing were not necessarily in impeccable condition.
