Samenvatting

Evidence for Late Roman building activity in the hinterland of Antium (Italy). Between 2001 and 2006 the Groningen Institute for Archaeology worked on reconstructing the settlement history in the territory of the presentday municipality of Nettuno. The study area is thought to have represented the southern part of the ager of the Roman colony of Antium. In this settlement history there appears to be a strong decline in the number of sites from the beginning of the 3rd century AD onwards, a common phenomenon in other parts of Central Italy as well. The study of a collection of tile stamps, among which are examples that were certainly produced in our study area, does however indicate that the economic situation in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD was still dynamic enough for new commercial initiatives to be undertaken.
