Samenvatting

Field explorations in the Monti Lepini (Italy): a short research history. From 1988 onwards, the GIA has been conducting research in the Monti Lepini (Lazio, Italy). This article presents a summary of the projects carried out up to 2008. From 1988 until 2002 the emphasis of GIA research was on mapping the rural hinterlands of the early Roman colonies on the scarp of the Lepini, with occasional brief visits to explore the mountains. Especially after 2005, research was redirected towards closing the challenging ‘research gaps’ in the mountains. The Hidden Landscapes Project started in 2006 and developed a sampling approach based on a landscape classification system, and special field methods to deal with problems of accessibility and visibility in the mountains. Preliminary results and future work are briefly discussed.
