Samenvatting

Hunting, habitation and internment on the western side of the Hondsrug (province of Groningen). This article presents the Neolithic finds from excavations in the southern part of the city of Groningen alongside the Helpermaar watercourse. The finds consist of a Neolithic grave and a large concentration of flint artefacts (c. 45,000 pcs.), stones and dozens of potsherds, which is interpreted as a settlement site. The settlement can be attributed to the TRB, given the presence of decorated pottery (Brindley’s Horizon 4, c. 3200-3050 BC), transverse points, strike-a-lights and fragments of polished flint axes. A grave of the Single Grave Culture was found at a distance of approximately 100 meters from the settlement. No grave goods were found except for a small beaker. In the grave a silhouette of a body was visible. The body lay on the right side with the beaker placed between the chin and the chest. It is likely to be a male burial. A barrow may once have covered the grave.
