Samenvatting

A Neanderthaler encampment in the Corversbos near Hilversum (province of Noord-Holland). In the Corversbos, west of Hilversum, the first author discovered a Late Middle Palaeolithic site in 1969. Some 40 artefacts have been picked up from the fields. So far, three side-scrapers were recovered, of which one is retouched bifacially. One of three cores is a Levallois core. Another is a unipolar core for short blades; in its last phase it was worked by an apprentice in flintworking – probably a child. The third core was relinquished during preparation. Two blades are present. Since 2008, the field is searched regularly by a local group of amateur archaeologists of the AWN, which has resulted in the recovery of a small side-scraper. Further finds are expected to come to light, which it is hoped will clarify the site’s cultural position.
