Kevers en hun potentie voor onderzoek in het terpengebied

Samenvatting

Beetles and their potential for research in the terpen region. Archaeo-entomological research was conducted in the investigation of Dutch ancient dwelling mounds (‘terpen’ in Friesland or ‘wierden’ in Groningen). The aim of this research was to explore its potential for shedding light on the degree of salinity and the exploitation of the erstwhile salt marshes. The first results are remarkable: no similarities are found between the beetle faunas of the modern salt marshes and the salt marshes before the terpen region was endiked. In view of the explorative nature of this initial research, the implications and the exact causes of these results need further investigation. We did effectively demonstrate the potential of archaeo-entomological research in the ‘terpen region’, with more results to be expected in the near future.
