Samenvatting

A disturbed shipwreck site in the Noordoostpolder (province of Flevoland). In 2009 a heavily damaged shipwreck with a building date of AD 1587 was excavated at lot R 4 in the Noordoostpolder. The maximum dimensions of the wreck were estimated at 15x4x1 m, which means that it was a medium-sized cargo vessel. Although the exact type could not be established, the flat bottom with pointed ends suggests a provenance in Overijssel. Therefore, the vessel might belong to the family of the seagoing punt, bok or pram. Around and under the vessel were enormous numbers of non-related artefacts, dating from the 11th to the 18th century, probably waste from the nearby settlement and fortifications of the village of Kuinre. The wreck clearly examplifies the vulnerable situation of shipwrecks in Flevoland, of which 70 still lie in situ. Without strong protective measure and/or the safeguarding of evidence by excavation, this important resource for understanding our rich maritime past will be lost for the future.
