Hoe de A ooit langs de stad Groningen stroomde
Samenvatting
How the A once flowed along the city of Groningen. West of the Hondsrug moraine, the river A follows its meandering course. Near the city of Groningen its meanders have long since been lost, probably due to human intervention. Many researchers have tried to reconstruct the original course of the river. Unfortunately, most of these reconstructions are based on little archaeological evidence. For this article archaeological data from more than 50 sites near the city, on both sides of the river, have been analyzed in order to identify the most plausible reconstruction. Still none of the proposed reconstructions could be fully substantiated. However, it can be concluded that the A most probably had a more south-westerly course than was previously assumed.
