Samenvatting

Carolingian settlement in the early-medieval ringwalburg of Domburg (province of Zeeland). In 2010, a small-scale rescue excavation was carried out in the early-medieval stronghold of Domburg. This excavation uncovered five dwelling-byres, dating between c. AD 875-950. Also the yards could be reconstructed to a certain extent. These farmhouses were inhabited by self-sufficient farmers. The large size of the fortress, as well as the fact that the dwelling-byres were constructed from timber, points to a connection with the nearby trading centre of Walacria. This wealthy trading centre would have needed a large fortress for protection against Viking raids, before being deserted around AD 875. One of several remarkable finds is a fragment of a Saxon clinker-built boat from Southampton, with a dendrochronological date of AD 769. A recovered metal brooch probably is of Viking origin.
