Samenvatting

A ‘new’ cog in the Northeast Polder. In 1949, a stern hook and a stern post from a cog were found at lot NM 133 in the Northeast Polder (the Northern section of the province of Flevoland). In the following years, these finds were neglected and more or less forgotten. In this article, an attempt is made to estimate the original size of the vessel to which the stern hook and post belonged. In order to determine if there is a relationship between the dimensions of stern posts and ship size, the dimensions of five cogs were compared. It turned out that there is a positive correlation between the dimensions of the stern post and ship size, especially in the thickness of the stern post, which shows a direct relationship to the length of the ship. The correlation between the width of the stern post and the length of the vessel is also positive, though in this case, the relationship is somewhat uncertain. The size of the cog to which the stern post and hook belong could be estimated at 15 m x 4.5 m x 1.5 m. As it was to be expected, the length of the sternpost is also positively correlated to the depth of hold of the vessel.
