Samenvatting

Ritual use of Iron Age rotary querns from the Northern Netherlands. A total of 58 fragments of basaltic lava stone rotary querns, that were most likely imported from the Eifel region, Germany, from Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland have been examined for signs of use and identify means of their fragmentation. Incomplete querns are common finds on settlements, yet there is no adequate explanation for their fragmentation. The quern pieces have been examined to see if the damage could have been brought about by intentional human activities, possibly during rituals. The results show that it is very likely that querns were deliberately broken and deposited as single fragments, but due to the lack of supporting evidence and contextual information, it is difficult to discern whether or not they were broken during rituals.
