Samenvatting

Excavating ‘Satricum’. The acropolis of ancient Satricum, a small hill-top site near the present village of Le Ferriere, was subject to intensive excavations by the Department of Classical and Mediterranean Archaeology by the University of Groningen from 1979 to 1991. Remains of hut, cooking and garbage pits were found indicating an active habitation of the site during the Late Iron Age (1000-600 BC). These features were recovered underneath 6th century BC houses, founded on stone blocks and covered with tiles. This pattern suggests a development in social complexity during this period. The research at Satricum contributes to our understanding of this process at Satricum and also in a general sense for the region of Old Latium.
