Samenvatting

The Middle Palaeolithic site at Mander: new finds reveal greater complexity. New finds from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Mander near Ootmarsum in the province of Overijssel are briefly described in this article. In total, about 105 artefacts have been collected so far. Featured among these finds are 18 tools, one of which is a triangular hand axe and another possible hand axe fragment, about ten side-scrapers including a beautiful Quina-type specimen, three disques and a possible predecessor of a disque. In addition, there are a few couteau à dos naturel and a denticulated fragment. Among the flakes, there are a handful of blades, some of which were clearly created using soft percussion. There are 22 cores, including several Levallois cores. Four or five ‘micro-cores’, on average less than 3.5 cm in length, are of particular interest because they were probably worked by apprentice flint knappers given the many signs of unskilled workmanship in addition to their small size.
