Samenvatting

Stave bowls of the Late Medieval and Early Modern periods. This paper presents the results of a study of a type of wooden kitchen- or tableware (shallow stave bowls; Dutch: ‘duigenbakjes’, German: ’Daubenschalen’) from the Late Middle Ages and New Era, found in the city of Groningen during archaeological excavations. Because of the scarcity of archaeological contexts that preserve wood, the presence of wood is often underestimated in medieval kitchen- or tableware. Wooden tableware and especially stave bowls were probably affordable for everyone in the Late Middle Ages and New Era and therefore present in the average Dutch households, at least in the northern regions. This research has yielded more information about typological chronology of this category of tableware, the ratio of the different types of wood which were used for the production of the stave bowls and their geographical distribution.
