Samenvatting

Fortunately we still have the photos - the wooden club from Klazienaveen (Drenthe). In 1936 a wooden object was found in the peat near the village of Klazienaveen. It is an 86 cm long shaft with an egg-shaped head with a length of just over 12 cm and six notches at the bottom of the shaft. As the original object has disappeared we have to rely on the photos and descriptions from the 1930s and 1970s. The artefact resembles the maces of Berumerfehn and Wiesmoor - peat finds dating from the period of the Single Grave Culture that have been interpreted as weapons - and also the club from the Late Neolithic burial 12 at the Schokland-P14 site. The Klazienaveen club is probably made of oak. It may well date from the period of the Single Grave Culture, though a slightly later date is also possible. Wooden clubs may have been less rare in large parts of prehistory than we would tend to assume on the basis of the small number of finds.
