Samenvatting

22 years later: an excavated archaeological trench near Hooghalen. Archaeological investigations carried out along various parts of a newly constructed water main near Hooghalen touched upon sites previously investigated by Professor van Giffen in 1925 and by members of the then Biological Archaeological Institute (BAI) at Groningen in the 1990s. The trenches at the Holtesch site, discussed here, were situated where trenches had been previously dug by the BAI. One of the new trenches yielded a remarkable result: several of the previously partially uncovered plans of buildings could now be completed thanks to new discoveries. Combining the results of both investigations resulted in the complete layout of a house and several smaller structures (barns, sunken-floored huts). Ceramic sherds dating to the 5th - 7th centuries AD offer dates for these structures.
