Samenvatting

From offering to excavation: more evidence about megalithic tomb D42-Westenesch-Noord (municipality of Emmen, prov. of Drenthe). Prof. A.E. van Giffen excavated and restored megalithic tomb D42 in 1960. In the process 860 decorated TRB/Funnel Beaker Culture sherds were recovered. The author examined this material and identified 131 decorated vessels. The earliest material dates to Horizon 2 (3300 -3250 BC) and probably derives from offerings. The large quantity of Horizon 3 and 4 vessels supports the idea of large feasts near the tomb in that period (3250-3125 /3125-2975 BC). The tomb was also used at the end of the Funnel Beaker Culture (Horizons 6 and 7, 2850 – 2800 /2800 – 2750 BC). The decoration of the ceramics is on the whole comparable to that on material from other megalithic tombs in Drenthe.
