Abstract

Leeuwarden is said to have been a market place since at least 1000 AD as Leeuwarden minted during the 11th century. Although an important non-agrarian component is likely to have existed in Leeuwarden during the 11th and 12th century and even earlier trading contacts can be demonstrated, the exact economic role ofLeeuwarden remains unknown due to the lack of information concerning both Leeuwarden and the contacts of the nearby villages.
