La afinadora de árboles [The Tree Tuner] (2019), written and directed by the Argentine filmmaker Natalia Smirnoff, depicts the story of Clara Mains (Paola Barrientos), a children’s literature author who, after receiving a prestigious international award, tries to overcome a creative block reconnecting with people from her past who inspire her to imagine a new future. This paper explores Smirnoff’s film from an intermedial perspective, addressing the articulation of the protagonist’s creative practice and life trajectory through an analysis of the dialogue between artistic languages, codes and media, and their links to the intersecting themes of–and tensions between–youth and maturity, private and public spaces, and individual and collective production.
