Samenvatting

The scientific work of the priest and economist M.J.H. Cobbenhagen today is largely forgotten. Yet, the encompassing analysis of problems of modern societies that Cobbenhagen developed during the 1930s and '40s make him an interesting scholar whose work already addressed many of the themes that are currently being discussed as typical to new economic-sociological approaches. Cobbenhagen's long-term chairmanship of the Dutch Sociological Association forms a telling illustration of his commitment to multidisciplinary endeavours. The developments of the 1950s, however, rapidly made his work on the embedded nature of economic developments marginal to academic debates in both economics and sociology. As in economics, the sociological discipline in the Netherlands, so the article argues, established itself by demarcating its intellectual goals in terms of empirical research problems. This entailed the general acceptance of methodological preferences that disallowed the development of a multidisciplinary social science as envisaged by Cobbenhagen.
