Samenvatting

In modern Western societies, a growing part of the population achieves high levels of education in a specific field. Therefore, field of study has become important in studying the social stratification of life chances. In this article, we present a measurement of four types of resources that people acquire during their educational career: cultural, economic, communicative and technical field-resources. We examine the explanatory power of these four scales on leisure behaviour, social and political orientation, and labour market opportunities in the Netherlands. Results indicate that high brow cultural participation is strongly affected by cultural field-resources. A progressive attitude and behaviour of those who hold mainly communicative resources and a conservative attitude and behaviour of those who are more technically educated, indicates that these life chances should not primarily be understood from Bourdieu's distinction in cultural and economic resources, but rather from a social versus non-social distinction. Cultural resources have a positive impact on occupational status, and field-resources explain the entry into matching jobs.
