Samenvatting
Dutch social scientists use level of education on the one hand and the economic and cultural occupational resources on the other, as the main determinants of lifestyle choices. Since skills and preferences are shaped in education, we argue that besides level of education we also need field of education to more thoroughly understand lifestyle choices. Using national representative data of 1992, we examine the explanatory power of level and field of education for a wide variety of lifestyle choices. Furthermore, we investigate whether the occupational economic and cultural resources offer an additional explanation. Our results show that lifestyle choices are predominantly caused by educational characteristics. Only for a few lifestyle choices cultural or economic occupational resources have an effect after controlling for level and field of education.
