Samenvatting

According to the idea of the increasing gap between citizens and politics, political interest is decreasing. Using longitudinal Dutch election study data, no general support is found for this claim. Political interest Levels seem to have increased over the last twenty years, as a result of developments that affect the population as a whole, and a result of increasingly high educated younger cohorts. Because of the growing importance of television as a source of political information, younger cohorts are at the same time responsible for decreasing levels of reading about national news.
