Samenvatting

In this article we study trends in social mobility during the early career of Dutch male and female birth cohorts (born between 1915 en 1967). First, we describe developments in labour market mobility and occupational status during the first ten years of the career. Second, we investigate the effects of both individual characteristics (family background, sex, education) and labour market segmentation (industrial sector, social class) on career development. An analysis on the life history data from the 'Dutch Family Life Survey 1992-93' leads to the following conclusions. First, we observe an increase over cohorts in job mobility, mobility between industrial sectors and mobility between social classes, but more pronounced for men than for women. Second, men start their occupational careers at higher levels and have steeper careers than women. Third, the value of education during the occupational career is slightly larger for men than for women. Fourth, fir men the status of the first occupation becomes a less strong predictor of success over cohorts, which speaks for an increasing openness of the Dutch labour market. Fifth, labour market segmentation (Stinchcombe's industrial classification and EGP class scheme) does not affect the careers of men and women. An interesting exception is the positive effect of a start in the bureaucratic service sector for women.
