Samenvatting

This study examines the influence of the mother's education on the education of her children, in addition to that of the father's education and occupation. Stratification research tends to disregard the possible influence of the mother. Our results show, however, a clear influence of the mother's education on her children's. Over time, this influence is positive and constant, and is roughly the same for sons as for daughters. Our conclusion is that in the Netherlands the total parental influence (i.e. the influence of mother's education and father's education and occupation) has declined in the period 1905-1965.
