Sociological research on meaning has generally focused on religion, historically & currently considered to be the primary source of meaning. Modern sociology of religion has developed new theoretical & methodological perspectives based on a functional definition of religion. Thomas Luckmann's The Invisible Religion: The Problem of Religion in Modern Society (London: Macmillan, 1967) generated research interest in human meaning & in meaning systems used by individuals to make sense of everyday life.
