1986 questionnaire survey data

Samenvatting

In an investigation of economic considerations in voting, several LISREL models are tested using longitudinal questionnaire survey data (N = 500 respondents [Rs]) collected in 1986 in the Netherlands via microcomputer terminals in Rs' homes linked to the National Instit of Public Opinion & Market Research's main computer. Results show that voters' evaluation of goverment policy effects on the national economic condition is a more important determinant of their vote than their evaluation of the effects of government policies on their own personal economic condition. Differential models for various social classes were found, but self-reliant individuals had similar voting determinants as compared to those who were "government reliants." The effect of party identification on voting is also discussed. It is concluded that 10-15% of the Dutch vote is determined by perceptions & evaluations of government policies & the national economy. 1 Table, 6 Figures, 28 References. Modified HA
