Samenvatting

A review essay on books by: Dick Ruimschotel, Explanation, Causation and Psychological Theories ([dissertatie] U Amsterdam: z. uitg., 1987); A. Smaling, Methodologische objectiviteit en kwalitatief onderzoek ([Methodological Objectivity and Qualitative Research] Lissie: Swets en Zeitlinger, 1987); & H. A. P. Swart, Explanation in Psychology (Delft: Eburon, 1985 [see listings in IRPS No. 48]). Even though these recent works are mainly oriented toward psychology, they share certain problems & ideas in common with the behavioral & sociocultural sciences. Swart's work contains scientific-theoretic systematic essays on various means of explanation. Ruimschotel's work deals with two psychological explanation theories: the cognitive dissonant theory & a problem solution theory. Smaling coined the "Munchhausen-Objectivity" phrase & elaborates on the many ways the notion of objectivity can be interpreted. M. Barker
