An analysis of census methods necessary for effective population prognosis

Samenvatting

A res device used by the author when inquiring into the pressure of pop on village resources in the Guilam province of Iran is described. Normal census taking (there were no official data available) proved unreliable since parents tended to ignore daughters & mentally or physically infirm children & to forget those away from home or leading reproachful lives. To complement the figures obtained in the first phase a diagram was prepared in which yrs of marriage were put on a vertical axis & the respective (remembered) pregnancies on a horizontal one. A number of symbols were designed to indicate the nature & the fate of the remembered pregnancy (life, still or twin birth, miscarriage) & also to denote death of child, sex, disruption of marriage (any reason) & remarriage (married woman only). The latter were invited to recount their "childbearing career." The F interviewers demanded explanations for every irregularity of pattern that showed up. The biographical information was recorded separately. AA.
