Samenvatting

To investigate the social status of nonworking Dutch adults, questionnaire data were obtained from couples (N = 70,805) as reported in the Dutch Central Statistics Bureau's 1985 labor force survey. A classification of social status is developed that divides the nonworking by their degree of inclusion in the labor market & by their type of activity; these categories are scaled for social distance, & separately for men & women. The scale proposed assumes that certain lifestyles are expected from those wishing to belong to specific social groups, leading to restrictions on social contacts & to highly visible marriage patterns. Different segments of the nonworking population have various levels of social status: eg, disabled & unemployed men & disabled women not seeking employment have low status, while students have a high status. 4 Tables, 26 References.
