Aspects of the selection and social mobility of the Dutch burgomasters in the bigger municipalities. After a discussion of the functions of a Dutch burgomaster, data are given about selection and career. These office-bearers are predominantly over fifty years of age; mostly they are university-trained or of equal education, and have risen to their present posts via official or professional careers. Data about provenance are still lacking.
