Samenvatting
Expansion and contraction of small independent firms. Brief description of one of the theses out of the general theory constructed by the Swiss social economist F. Marbach concerning the economically active middle classes. The thesis says that small independent firms, as a type of business, are not bound to be pushed away by big business, although single small firms might be regularly ousted from the market. This thesis is tested for the Netherlands by means of a study of the development of the amount of small firms during the period 1930—1950.
