Commuting as a social phenomenon. This article tries to analyse the economic, and in particular, the sociological consequences of the increased rate of daily travel for new industrial workers. It is based on a inquiry among 287 commutors in the Tielerwaard, a region where heavy commuting already exists. The daily loss of time by travelling has a big influence on family and community life. One consequence is the danger that the industrial commutor is becoming a "marginal” person, e.g., he is neither present at social events of the factory, nor is he at the meeting of the trade unions in the community where he dwells. On the other hand, he contributes to the urbanization of the country by bringing in new ideas and ways of behaving. This article also tries to analyze the psychological reasons for the industrial commutor’s refusal to move from his rural home area to the industrial center.
