Samenvatting

The central question in this article is whether differences in effectiveness between secondary schools in The Netherlands should be attributed to differences in denomination per se or to whether the particular denomination forms a majority or minority of schools in the region. It is shown that schools of a denomination with either a clear majority or minority position in the region are less effective than schools of a denomination that enrolls about forty percent of the students in the region. The competition between schools to attract students is suggested as an explanation of this phenomenon.
