Samenvatting

The dominant opinion in cultural sociology as well as in the sociology of education for lower class children, is that lower class culture is an undifferentiated, homogeneous culture and that schools for lower class children essentially are similar. In cultural capital theory it is said that only legitimate forms of art are a cultural resource and that forms of low art have no symbolic value. The habitus of a social class is defined as the interiorisation of the volume, composition and seniority of cultural and economic capital. The lower class's habitus is, therefore, defined by what it does not have and the corresponding lifestyle as what it is not. Lower-class culture would be a homogeneous culture. In this paper, in contrast to cultural capital theory, it is argued that both high art and low art have syntholic value and that in each social class fractions can be distinguished that are oriented on either cultural or economic resources. The results of an exploratory empirical investigation, carried out in a Dutch Middletown, indicate a differentiation between culturally and economically oriented fractions within the lower classes and within the elementary schools market for lower class children for as strong as that within the upper classes and their childrens' schools.
