EPITAPHS

Samenvatting

This essay deals with two related paradoxes. First of all, although French and Flemish have become the symbol of a pro-Walloon and a pro-Flemish political identity respectively, far from all epitaphs are written in the language that symbolizes the political identity of the deceased. Secondly, while a large part of the Fourons population has been Gallicized, the graveyards have been partly de-Gallicized. Both paradoxes can be explained by the strong politicization of language preferences. It is concluded that the language of the epitaph is a statement on political identity and on the relationships between close family members - dead and living - with the same or opposing political identities.
