Samenvatting

There are only few studies on the characteristics of the electorate of the Centrum Partij/Centrum Democraten. First, this electorate is described in terms of sociological characteristics, based on accumulated data gathered during the period 1982-1992. Second, fluctuations in this electorate are described over the last decade. Third, several hypotheses derived from two theories concerning the electorate of the former fascist parties are tested. According to the economic interest theory, especially manual laborers and self-employed people are predisposed to vote for extreme right-wing parties. These hypotheses were as yet not falsified. According to the symbolic interest theory, especially socially disintegrated people are predisposed to vote for extreme right-wing parties. These hypotheses were also not falsified. Especially youngsters, people living on social security, unchurched, people living in the big cities of the provinces in the west of the country and people who had previously turned their back on politics appeared to vote for these parties.
