Samenvatting

Examination of 473 research reports shows that regression analysis is still not a frequently used method of analysing data in applied social research. If this method is used, assumptions and measurement problems are dealt with rather carelessly and in the end results are far from substantial. In the equations most of the variables are ordinal in character or dichotomies. Only a minority of the variables meets the usually required interval or ratio level of measurement. Explained variance is in general low, in one third of the equations 5% or less, and too often one is not careful enough in the interpretarion of effects.
