Samenvatting

Differences between women and men in management positions in the retail trade Leadership can be seen as a game which is played better by men than by women because men know the rules better than women. This statement was the starting point for the article. The following question is answered. Are there differences between women and men in management positions in the retail trade? If so, how can these differences be explained? In a large retail store it appears that men more often have management positions than women. To explain the differences, first an elaboration of the human capital theory (Becker, 1957, Mincer, 1974) - the two-career-hypothesis (Roos, 1981) - is tested. This hypothesis is not confirmed: it is found that even in the case women have the same experience as men, have a fulltime job and are married, men still more often have the management positions. Then the 'token'-theory (Kanter, 1977) is tested: members of a minority group have less opportunities to reach a management position. This hypothesis is confirmed for women but it is not confirmed for men. Finally, the two hypotheses are tested in a multi-level-analysis.
