Samenvatting

On the occasion of the elections of the Second Chamber of Parliament in the Netherlands, held on 6 september 1989, it turned out that of the electoral cohorts 1971-1989 (18-43 years old) more women (83%) than men (64%) gave their ballot. This result is remarkable since women are found to be less interested in politics than men. Voting in the Netherlands occurs on Wednesday (between 8.00 a.m. and 7.00 p.m.). This might be a reason why voters without paid work, of which the majority is female, more often actually did vote than voters with paid work. After controlling for the characteristics 'interest in politics', 'education', 'paid work' and the 'attitude towards religion and politics', the relationship between sex and voting remained. We did not expect this. This might be a sign that either other characteristics should be incorporated into the model or that the operarionalization of the four mentioned variables is inadequate.
