Samenvatting

The primary concern of Dutch arts policy in the nineties is the relationship between art and society. Part of the responsibility for this relationship is delegated to the individual art producers. This article presents a selection of the major publications in the field of arts production and reception within society. A connection is made between these publications and the various contemporary views on Dutch arts policy. It is argued that the latest view indicates a need for theoretical development and new research. Suggested criteria for new theories are: the inclusion of a specific function of art, a network approach and adequate micro-macro transitions. Research should concentrate on the development of specific marketing concepts for the arts, that also serve the collective purpose of arts participation.
