Samenvatting

This article presents a new occupational status scale for the Netherlands. This new multidimensional scale has been developed in order to improve the predictive power of occupational position in social inequality research. We use the theory of Pierre Bourdieu on occupations and life style, which differentiates between two stratifications: a cultural and an economic one. According to Bourdieu's theory, cultural status is indicated by education and government-employment, whereas economic status can be indicated by income and self-employment or private-sector employment. Data from eleven Dutch national survey data sets on work characteristics were aggregated for 74 occupational categories, distinguishing between male and female versions of these occupations. An aggregated file was constructed containing male and female occupations as cases, and occupational characteristics such as average income level, percentage of higher educated, percentage self-employed and the like as variables. Principal component analysis revealed a two factor structure of occupations which is well interpretable as distinguishing two independent dimensions of occupations: an economic and a cultural dimension. Generally, men's occupations have higher economic positions, while men's and women's occupations appeared to have the same positions on the cultural scale. The tentative application of the new scales to ideological views showed that dimensions in ideological views parallel to great extent the two dimensions in occupational status.
