Samenvatting

Eleven Dutch autochtonous adults living in an old neighbourhood in the centre of the city of Rotterdam discussed in two groups during four evenings the situation in their neighbourhood. Transcripts of the discussions were analysed focussing on the topic of ethnic minorities and inter-ethnic relations. Three dominant interpretative repertoires which the participants used in describing, explaining and justifying their views are identified: own choice, snowed under, and holy cow. They refer to ethnic minorities themselves, the living conditions in the neighbourhood, and the role of authorities and the moral community, respectively. It is argued that these three repertoires provide points of departure in trying to redress these views.
