Questionnaire data obtained from Dutch citizens born in 1961 (N = 583) are used to investigate how & why young adults leave the parental home. Three main reasons are established: (1) to finish school; (2) to live with a partner; & (3) to gain independence. Both timing & reasons for leaving depend on the resources of parents, including material & nonmaterial goods: eg, high levels of transferable resources accelerate the process of leaving home, while high levels of nontransferable resources slow it down. 3 Tables, 3 Figures, 49 References.
